ST MARGARET’S CHURCH

A letter from the builder to the congregation:

I built the Memorial Garden at St. Margaret's in honor of my father, The Rev. Dr. Charles "Skip" Blair, Jr. When I heard that the congregation wanted to remodel the garden, I was happy to be included in the new phase of this project.

My father was an amazing man. His value of church and family was the guiding force in everything he did. He was an ordained Episcopal priest after graduating from Virginia Theological Seminary, and later went on to obtain a masters degree in Psychology from the Virginia Commonwealth University and a PhD in Educational Counseling from UVA.

My father was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, a treatable form of cancer, after having been misdiagnosed previously, when I was a freshman at LSU. One of my fondest memories of him as a father was a discussion I had with him when he was sick. I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life at that time. I told my father I wanted to major in Construction, but that I had no background in it, whatsoever. He told me that if I put God and my family in the forefront of my life and lived with honor, that I could do anything that I wanted to do.

My wife and I started our company, Blair Construction, when I was 24 years old. I was recently ranked as one of the top homebuilders in the state of Louisiana, and I owe my success to the foundation instilled in me from a wonderful man.

My father died when he was 47 years old, when I was a sophomore in college; so, when I had the opportunity to build this memorial garden, I thought it would be a great place for me to build something for such an honorable and deserving man.

Thank you, Father Tommy, for giving me the opportunity to describe to you my inspiration for this special garden.
